Corby International Workers Memorial Day Commemoration event happened on Saturday the 28th April 2018. We had hoped to hold the event outside beside the Steelworker statue at The Cube, Corby; however the weather got the better of us and the event took place in the Council Chambers inside The Cube. Workers Memorial Day is an annual event that commemorates the tragic deaths of workers in the workplace, all over the world workers and their representatives conduct events, demonstrations, vigils and a whole host of other activities to mark the day. The day is also intended to serve as a rallying cry to: “remember the dead, but fight for the living”
Each year GMB Northants Community Branch marks the Workers Memorial Day Commemoration with an event in Corby Northants. For 2018 the event will take place on Saturday the 28th April 2018 at 11.00am next to the Steelworker Statue in Corby town centre
***We hope to hold the event outside by the Steel Workers Statue, but if it is raining, we will be in the Council Chamber inside The Cube.***

The Corby Workers Memorial Day Commemorations went very well on the 29th April 2017, with speeches from Gordon Glassford, John McGhee, Ron Mendel, Bert Schouwenburg and Andy Sawford plus a donation presentation to June Hancock Mesothelioma Fund of £1525 and music from Gordons Volunteer Band Here are some pictures of the event The original plinth laid in 1993 in Coronation Park in Corby. This was where we used to meet to commemorate Workers Memorial Day. We now meet at the Steelworker statue by the Cube in Corby Town Centre. It was agreed to make a donation to the Jam Detached Youth Work Initiative in Corby The secretary has started the arrangement for this year’s Workers Memorial Day event. Letters have gone to various unions for support. Tom Beattie will speak, a request has gone to Labour Behind the Label to provide a speaker. Youth Brass 2000 have been asked if they could do a turn. A cheque had been presented to the Corby Food Bank at a cake sale to raise funds. Debbie said that £600 had been raised which is excellent and she passed on their thanks to the branch.. It was agreed that the branch should support the other food banks in the county. It was agreed that we donate £50 per quarter to each food bank by standing order. There are eight food banks. Branch finances remain healthy Traffic on the website is improving. Management at Kier in Corby seem to be sure that they will get a year’s extension on the current contract. There are lots of grievances and a couple of disciplinary being processed at the moment. Rachelle said that she is spending a lot of her time on site. The meeting closed at 7.50pm.
