Our right to strike is under attack.

Rishi Sunak has just detailed his anti-union legislation and plans to introduce new laws in the coming weeks.

It means that when workers democratically vote to strike, they could be forced to work and sacked if they don’t. That’s wrong, unworkable, and almost certainly illegal.

These new laws are a direct attack on working people’s fundamental right to strike to defend their pay, terms and conditions.

GMB Northants New Year Message 2023

To say that the past few years have been difficult for workers and their families would be to understate the obvious. What with the pandemic and the current economic crisis, people feel paralysed by the mess this government have flagrantly bestowed on communities throughout the UK.

This government have failed miserably to deal with the cost of living crisis but in doing so they are deliberately trying to distract from their failure by picking a fight with trade unions and the current wave of industrial action is a reaction to that failure. There is no alternative to such aggressive behaviour, we simply need to rise to that challenge and fight back and stand together supporting our members and their families. A union is not a union if it negates its own action. No matter how much the right wing press vilify, in the most disparaging way our right to protect workers and to withdraw our labour when faced with the intransigence of employers and the interference of government for political objective, we need to stand firm and we stand together.

GMB Northants is proud to be supporting the Ambulance Workers Strike (Wednesday 11th January 2023) and visited picket lines in Kettering, Corby and Northampton to support our wonderful brothers and sisters on the picket line

Cuba Talk Thursday 19th January 2023

Alan Irwin handing over medical supplies to the the Director of Health at the hospital we visited in Havana.

Our branch secretary: Alan Irwin recently visited Cuba and as part of that cultural visit he cycled over 400 kilometres down the West Coast towards Havana, raising much needed funds for a blind school and a local hospital.

Alan will be reporting back to the branch on that visit, as promised and talk about the impact the USA embargo is having on the economy and the people.
