A special thanks to Gordon for organising the event, the speakers and all those that attended.
Corby International Workers Memorial Day Commemoration event happened on Saturday the 28th April 2018. We had hoped to hold the event outside beside the Steelworker statue at The Cube, Corby; however the weather got the better of us and the event took place in the Council Chambers inside The Cube. Workers Memorial Day is an annual event that commemorates the tragic deaths of workers in the workplace, all over the world workers and their representatives conduct events, demonstrations, vigils and a whole host of other activities to mark the day. The day is also intended to serve as a rallying cry to: “remember the dead, but fight for the living” GMB Northants Branch Secretary Gordon Glassford has organised the Corby event for many years, and again excelled himself in organising the 2018 event. The event heard music from The Corby Silver Band, and Gordon Glassford opened the event and a minutes silence was held to remember the dead. Cllr Mick Scrimshaw spoke about the Northants County Council financial situation and workers safety. Gordon Glassford spoke on behalf of Justice for Columbia Beth Miller prospective Labour Candidate for Corby and East Northants spoke about her personal family experiences of injury at work Tim Roache General Secretary of the GMB Union spoke about the potential impact of Brexit on Health and Safety regulations and workers’ rights to be safe. A donation of £1000 was presented to Alida Coates, on behalf of June Hancock Mesothelioma Research Fund by Gordon Glassford and Tim Roache. This was followed by a light buffet in the member’s room. A special thanks to Gordon for organising the event, the speakers and all those that attended. “Remember the dead, but fight for the living” #IWMD18
