On Friday 28 September, an earthquake measuring 7.4 on the Richter scale rocked the Indonesian island of Sulawesi, triggering a terrifying tsunami that reached 18 feet in height and left a trail of destruction in its wake. The true scale of the disaster is only now becoming clear. Tens of thousands of homes have been destroyed and entire communities have been decimated. At least 1,700 people have died, thousands more are missing and hundreds of thousands of survivors are now in urgent need of humanitarian assistance, many of whom are children Read more about the DEC INDONESIA TSUNAMI APPEAL Please find attached the latest edition of the LRD Fact Service Guide to contents:
Work with GMB members in your temporary workforce to get a job guarantee contract that treats staff with respect and gives them security at work without the need to claim ‘in work’ benefits. GMB - the trade union for Amazon staff - is campaigning with local communities, tax justice groups and Amazon staff to make sure the company makes its full contribution to rebuilding the UK economy - both by paying wages its staff can live on and by paying its taxes. Rights for working people in Britain have been hard-won, often the result of decades of pressure from the labour movement. Brexit gives the Government the opportunity to undo all that work. Why is this important? Workers' rights in this country have been hard-won, but Brexit now gives the Government the chance to strip workers in Britain of their protections and rights at work. We can't allow that to happen. The Workers' Rights (Maintenance of EU Standards) Bill seeks to ensure that there is a floor of workers' rights below which no contract or employer can sink. This applies to rights such as protecting workers from redundancy if their company changes hands, health and safety rules and measures to protect employee representatives against detrimental treatment for carrying out their role. Please sign to support this bill https://you.38degrees.org.uk/petitions/protect-workers-rights-from-brexit and write to your MP to ask them to do the same. 38 Degrees, one of the biggest campaign groups in the UK, are now working on this too. Together their members have sent tens of thousands of letters to MPs demanding action to save the NHS from TTIP. You can join in here.
Taking part in the 38 Degrees action matters. It will show the government how many people worry about this, wherever they live and however they vote. And imagine how it would look from the goverment's perspecitive. First, People's NHS waded in and made this is an issue. Then it was in the newspapers and online. Now one of the biggest groups in the country is taking up arms. We're hitting the government harder than ever. Let's keep up the momentum. Write a letter to your MP today, with 38 Degrees. Thank you, Andrew, People's NHS GMB WELCOME LABOUR PLEDGES ON ZERO HOURS CONTRACTS AND WORKERS RIGHTS IN WORK MANIFESTOAt long last we have a major political party prepared to address and give rights to workers to shield them from exploitation in their workplaces says GMB
GMB commented on the Labour election pledge announced today (1st April 2015) on zero hours contracts and on the launch of the Labour work manifesto. See notes to editors for copy of speech by Ed Miliband. This is the link for the work manifesto: http://www.labour.org.uk/blog/entry/a-better-plan-for-britains-workplaces. Paul Kenny, GMB General Secretary, said "At long last we have a major political party prepared to address and give rights to workers to shield them from exploitation in their workplaces. At long last the damage of zero hours contracts is to be addressed. This news will be welcomed by thousands of people for whom the world of work is a daily lottery. Voters are faced with a stark choice - a party governing in the interest of corporate bosses with zero hours contracts and for tax breaks for the wealthy elite or a party seeking to provide rights and protection for working people. Hopefully David Cameron will find himself on a zero hours contract come May the 8th” |
