In the coming weeks and months there will be a debate about the future of the Labour Party and who leads it – a decision like that is too important to leave to politicians, the newspapers and think tanks.
I along with most trade unionists feel very disappointed with the election result, especially in Corby and East Northants where the electorate in their ‘wisdom’ have elected a right wing Tory and not Andy Sawford, the labour candidate and former MP who has represented the constituency since the bye election in 2012. Andy had been an excellent MP and had worked hard for all his constituents. There must be many who didn’t vote or voted UKIP who will be regretting their actions now. With the exception of Corby Borough Council Northamptonshire is now a sea of blue. Dedicated to the better off few with no consideration to the needs of the many.
Overall we now face five years of attacks on the poor, benefit cuts, slashes in local government funding, more food banks and the further privatisation of the NHS and education. At the same time right wing Tory MPs, with the aid of the press, will be working towards our exit from Europe. All this will fall into the hands of the SNP like manna from heaven. They will be able to claim, quite rightly, that Westminster no longer represents the interests of the people of Scotland and the breakup of the UK will be very real possibility. On top of this of course will be the effect on our members who face ever worsening conditions at work. We can expect the continuing use of agencies and more and more people working on zero hours contracts while being barely able to rent a home never mind buy a house. All the while the rich can look forward to more tax cuts while they continue to live off the fat of the land. We at the GMB will continue to represent the interests of our members but it’s going to be a long, hard five years. Gordon Glassford Branch Secretary GMB Northants Community Branch Northants |
