To mark International Workers Memorial Day 2023 GMB Northants hosted an event in Corby on Saturday 29th April 2023.
The event opened at the Corby Steel Workers Statue outside the Cube with speeches from Councillor Alison Dalziel, Councillor Martyn Reuby, and Lee Barron - Prospective Labour Parliamentary Candidate for Corby & East Northants.
A wreath was laid at the foot of the statue in memory of those who have lost their lives at work.

The event then moved inside the Cube where our Branch Secretary gave a speech to the event:
This was followed by a play by local artist and activist Paula Boulton called ‘The Planks Gave Way’ which was about the deaths of workers at Corby Steelworks and the importance of union involvement in the workplace. Appearing in the play were our Branch Secretary Alan Irwin and GMB Senior Organiser Rachelle Wilkins. Watch The Planks Gave Way here or below:

2023 was a poignant year for Corby as it marked the 25th year the event has been held. The first year Corby marked Workers Memorial Day in 1998, a tree was planted and a flagstone laid at Coronation Park in Corby. That event was front page news on the GMB Regional Magazine 'Contact' at the time:
