GMB Northants Branch has joined The Nottingham Tec branch of the GMB Union by making a donation to a Nottingham mother’s fundraising campaign.
Janine Brook of Bilborough has recently launched the ‘Boobie Date’ campaign. Janine comments, “I was diagnosed with breast cancer 6 years ago at the age of just 32. A year later the cancer spread and I now incurable secondary breast cancer. Up to now, I’ve been kept alive by modern breast cancer treatments, but cancer adapts and once it starts to spread again, you need to move on to another drug. The problem is that my cancer spread again in summer and although I had another mastectomy and radiotherapy to try and contain the local spread, the fact is that it’s in my system and it will spread again without anti-cancer drugs and I’m running out of options on the NHS. Although the fantastic team at Nottingham City hospital are looking for other possible drug trials, the reality is that there will shortly come a point at which I have to fund my own drugs. I have two young daughters and a husband and I simply can’t wait until I’m riddled with tumours, I need to fundraise now as the drugs cost tens of thousands of pounds.”
Janine continues, “My cancer is aggressive, but it does respond to treatment. So as well as asking for donations, I’m also trying to help raise awareness of the need for monthly breast self-examinations, for all adults. That includes young women and men. Most adults are aware of breast cancer, but they simply forget to check themselves regularly. My campaign aims to raise awareness by getting people to set a monthly ‘Boobie Date’; early detection has a huge impact on the prognosis.
Phil Soper, President of the Nottingham branch of the GMB Union heard about Janine’s plight at his son’s wedding. Phil comments, “I met Janine and her family at my son’s wedding and was shocked to hear how these two lovely small girls face the very real possibility of losing their mother at such a young age. I spoke to our Regional Secretary, Andy Worth the next week to see if we could help. He didn’t hesitate for one second and offered to donate some money from our charitable funds for good causes.”
