Summary of the branch meeting held on 29th July 2020
It was agreed that after the last informal meeting we should affiliate to the Cuba Solidarity Campaign for whom Bob Oram gave an excellent presentation. We also agreed to make an additional donation.
It was also agreed that we give a donation to the Disasters Emergency Committee appeal for developing countries affected by the pandemic.
Adrian was elected as auditor. One of the previous auditors has resigned. The quarterly branch audit will now be done online.
Our online presence has remained steady. The monthly newsletter has been sent out and the website updated.
One of members spoke about how the union had helped him after he had been assaulted at work and as a result has had to retire. He was a member of another union at the time who had been of no help to him and he had to hire ‘no win no fee’ solicitors. He has since joined the GMB and we were able to give him considerable help with his redundancy negotiations and pension arrangements. The branch had also helped him financially and he had been able to purchase a wheelchair. He agreed that we could put his comments on our website and this has now been done. The branch agreed to pay for the members retired life membership.
The monthly welcome letter has been sent out to all new members.
The secretary said he would like to improve communications with workplace reps. He is looking to come up with a report form, which reps could fill in on a quarterly basis so the branch can keep up with events. This could be discussed at the interim meeting to be held on August 19th.
We will also discuss proposals for next year Workers Memorial Day/May Day event to see if we could expand on it. This can also be discussed at the next meeting.
